Consider These Top Factors Before Choosing a University in Nigeria

Yesterday, the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) announced the official date for exam registration which means that several candidates will have to decide on their choice of University.

If you just graduated from secondary school and are looking to register for JAMB in the coming year, then you most likely have been thinking of what university to pick. Considering that the board only allows candidates to pick one university alongside a polytechnic and college of education, you don’t want to blow the opportunity. To help you make the best decision, we think that you should consider these factors first as they will most likely fuel your findings.

What course are you looking to study?

Not all universities offer the same course which means that it is possible for a university to not offer a course that you have in mind. This is enough to influence your choice of university because, in the long run, your choice of course outweighs your choice of University. If you already have a university in mind, make sure they have the course you want to study.

What is your current financial capability?

School fee varies from University to University. Federal Universities have lower tuition fees compared to state and private universities making them a more affordable option for many students. Therefore, considering your financial situation becomes an important factor in making a well-informed decision about which university to choose for your education, ensuring it works with your budget and financial capacity.

Proximity to your permanent residence

This is one factor that many candidates sideline and looking at it, it can help you to save money. For instance, if you live in Ibadan and choose the University of Ibadan, you could save a significant amount of money because you won’t need to spend as much on housing or commuting. Also, proximity to your permanent residence allows you to remain within familiar surroundings, maintaining existing support networks like family and friends.

The University’s Admission Requirement

It’s one thing to want to apply to a university, it is another thing to meet the admission requirement of the school. Each university sets specific criteria and standards for admission, including academic qualifications, standardized post-utme scores, prerequisite courses, and sometimes extracurricular activities. If you don’t meet these requirements,  your application may be rejected. This explains the importance of understanding and fulfilling these criteria before applying.

Campus Life/Culture

This is very important especially if you have a skill or craft that you would love to continue when you gain admission. Understanding the campus atmosphere, clubs, organizations, and available resources related to your interests can greatly enhance your university experience. If you really like something, maybe sport or art, picking a university that supports these things can help you get better, meet new friends, and learn new things.

There may be numerous factors to consider but merely thinking about the points listed above and answering all questions surrounding them should help you make a decision – the best one at that.
