Qualifications and Eligibility Criteria for NSE (Nigerian Society of Engineers) Membership

Every profession has an organization made up of members both at entry-level positions and well-experienced people in the field. This group of people meet together and share ideas, tips, and opportunities that would build up their careers and promote professional growth and stability for one another. One of these organizations is the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE). 

The NSE is the professional body for the engineering profession in Nigeria and it has its headquarters in Abuja.  It was established on the 16th of February, year 1958 and it is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission. They are dedicated to the provision of high-quality services to the various sectors of society at large, and the development of professional proficiency among its members for the development of the country and to contribute towards the advancement of technology in the world. 

NSE, like every other professional body, creates a platform aimed at sorting its members’ professional needs. It also gives an opportunity for mentorship, and networking with different groups of membership. By upholding the  Ethical practices and professional standards of engineering, the NSE envisioned itself as one of the best engineering professional bodies globally.  They participate actively in engineering research, practices, and education.

 The Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) Main objectives are:

  • To promote, protect, encourage, and maintain a high standard of engineering study and practice and to encourage greater efficiency therein.    
  • To present to the Government of Nigeria the views of the Society on any subject of concern or interest to engineers in Nigeria and if considered advisable to join with any other bodies in submitting such representation.
  • To represent to any other individual body or organization the views of the society on any subject of concern or interest to engineers in Nigeria or any appropriate subject on which the views of the Society may be invited.
  • To provide a body to which the Government or other official or unofficial authority or organization in Nigeria can have recourse for advice, assistance, or the expression of views on any subjects of concern or interest to engineers in Nigeria.
  • To facilitate the development and acquisition of technology by visiting places of engineering interest, reading technical papers, holding meetings, and conferences, and publishing books journals, and periodicals on engineering matters.
  • To subscribe or guarantee or otherwise use monies of the Society for charitable or benevolent objects or scholarships on bursaries or for any exhibitions for any public general or valuable objects.
  • NSE liaises with the government and the council for the regulation of engineering in Nigeria (COREN). On matters affecting the engineering progression in some government organizations and maintains close relationships with them on issues relating to the engineering profession.

Qualifications And Requirements

NSE Membership requirements are based on the membership category in the organization, Below are some requirements and forms of membership: 

Fellow

  • To be a fellow member, candidates must have been corporate members of the Society for 10 years in addition. 
  • HND holders must have an additional academic qualification(s) before the Fellowship.
  • Must have attended at least 5 AGMs in the last ten years prior to the year of application.
  • Must have written and presented four (4) Technical/Management papers at NSE and or any other form acceptable to the Board of Fellows. All papers must have been presented in the last 10 years.
  • Must have worked on some outstanding projects (that stand out from the ordinary).
  • Attended the yearly refresher Engineering Courses/Workshops to make him or her current on engineering practice and not with obsolete knowledge – must show evidence of this in the application form.
  • Must be active in his or her Branch and Division activities.
  • Financial status must be consistent. There must be evidence of consistency in the payment of dues to NSE in the last 5 years.

There are 2 ways to become a fellow member below: 

  • By invitation – the Council had approved N2.5m for applicants by invitation. The intention was to limit the number of applicants for this category and encourage applicants by application.
  • By application – the Council also approved N300,000 for this category of applicants.

Honorary fellow

To be acknowledged as an honorary fellow, candidates not necessarily engineers, should have used their positions to render notable assistance to the practice of engineering science.

Corporate member

They are grouped into various categories but the candidate must be up to 50 years of age & above and have either of the following credentials B.Sc in Sciences with Post Graduate Diploma (PGD) and Masters degree in Engineering City & Guilds of 1999 with PGD and Masters degree in the same field of Engineering

Graduate

A person seeking admission to Graduate Membership shall possess an academic qualification acceptable to the Council of the Society and registrable by the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN). HND holders are not registrable

Associate

An Associate of the Society shall possess an academic qualification at the level of a university degree in the sciences allied to engineering science or the qualifications approved by the Council of the Society. In addition, he shall have been engaged in work related to the practice of engineering for a minimum period of 5 years.

Student

A Student Member shall be a person who is undertaking an approved engineering course of training leading to a degree in an institution recognized by the Council of the Society for the purpose of training professional engineers.
