Immigration is the process involved in the relocation of individuals from one country to another country to either become a permanent citizen or resident of the country. The Nigeria Immigration is the body in charge of the immigration process. That is if you want to travel or relocate, you need to apply through NIS.
The Nigeria Immigration service is a governmental body saddled with the responsibility of maintaining and managing immigration in Nigeria. It was abstracted from the Nigeria Police Force in 1958 and has since conception, positioned itself towards the restructuring, reformation and Implementation of modern migration services. They issue travel documents and passports for the Nigeria Citizens and have rapidly grown with the technological advancement in the world by the use of ICTs in its daily operations. Other services rendered by the NIS are:
- Convention Travel Documents – also referred to as Refugees passport is issued to refugees. It is a biometric and bonafide travel document valid for international travels.
- Residence Permit – This is issued to individuals who want to travel out of their country to reside in another country permanently.
- Visa on arrival permit – This is given to visitors for a specific period of days.
- Ecowas Travel Certificate – This is issued to Nigerians citizens who desire to travel to other Ecowas member states.
How to apply for a US visa in Nigeria.
Application for a US visa in Nigeria is dependent on the Visa Type. The Immigrants and the Non- immigrants Visa. To apply for a US visa for the first time, Do the following:
- Complete the Nonimmigrant or immigrant Visa Electronic Application form
- Pay the visa application fee.
- Schedule your appointment.
- Go to the U.S. Embassy on the date and time of your visa interview.

- Log on to the portal, fill and submit your application form
- Print and fill out the referee form
- Your Nationality should be Nigeria
- Submit all requested documents including your NIN, birth certificate, academic and mental Health certificate
- Go for a drug Test and submit your results
- Your age should be between 18-30 years as at application
- Doctors and pharmacists should not be more than 35 years old before application.
- Be a computer literate

- Superintendent of Immigration (SI) compass 11 professional – This position is available for Doctors. Applicants should have a first degree in MBBS from a well known institution of learning and also have a NYSC certificate of completion or exemption.
- Assistant Superintendent of Immigration II (ASI) CONPASS 08 – This position is open for all individuals as long as you have a Bachelor’s degree or Higher National degree from a recognized Institution.
- Deputy Superintendent of Immigration (DSI) CONPASS 10 professional – This is open to Pharmacists. Applicants must have a first degree in Pharmacy from a known learning institute and a NYSC discharge/exemption certificate.
- Immigration Assistant III (IA III CONPASS 03 Artisans) – This role is open to motor drivers and mechanics.To apply, you must have a minimum of SSCE or its equivalents, be an expert in the field and get a trade test certificate.
- Assistant Inspector Immigration (All) General Duty CONPASS 06 – THis is open to all Applicants who are holders of a National Diploma, NCE or Advance NABTEB obtained from recognised institutions.
- Immigration Assistant; (IA I11) CONPASS 03 General Duty – Individuals who are interested in this role must be holders of GCE Ordinary Level, SSCE/NECO, GCE or its equivalent with a minimum of 4 credit in not more than two (2) sittings, including English and Mathematics.
