What is considered a Full Time Job in Nigeria?

In tracking employees’ time and attendance, companies are beginning to adopt more innovative methods provided through human resources software. So, whether it is a full time or part time job, the number of hours utilized by employees in performing their jobs is now easily tracked.

In identifying what a full time job is and the yardstick for measuring a full time job in Nigeria, we must understand the industry, company, or agreement bargained by employers.

In Nigeria, a full time job is that which requires a minimum of 35-40 hours per week. Here’s how it works: full time employees are expected to work a standard Monday-Friday schedule, with some flexibility to work additional hours as needed.As expected in every part of the world, so it is in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Labour Act governs the employment laws in the country, does not give a specific definition of full time employment, however, it requires employers to provide employees with a written contract outlining the terms and conditions of employment, including working hours, within three months of commencement.

According to the Nigerian Labour Act, the contract should state in clear terms what the employees’ working hours, job responsibilities, and other terms of employment are.

As practiced in Nigeria, the standard working hours for employees are generally found to consist of 8-hour a day, 5 days a week, with some flexibility to work additional hours as needed.

Full time employees are usually entitled to benefits such as annual leave, sick leave, and mandatory pension contributions. Depending on the job positions and industry, full time employees in Nigeria may be considered for bonuses, promotions, and other benefits, depending on the expected performance and company’s policies.

How Many Hours per Day Are Required for a Full Time Job in Nigeria?

Though the NLA does not particularly give specific requirements for full time employees’ work hours, it does provide guidelines for full time employment in Nigeria. The NLA Act states that a standard workweek cannot exceed six days, and a workday should not surpass eight hours.

While there is no specific definition of full time job in Nigeria in terms of hours, the general understanding is that full time employees work a minimum of 35-40 hours per week. However, this can vary depending on the industry, company or agreements between the employer and employee.

This is why the Nigerian Labour Act has made it a requirement for organisations and employers of labours to clearly outline the terms and conditions of employment for an employee. The written contract must include vital information, such as the working hours of that employee, within three months that the employee commences the job.
