What Should I Do When I Start To Feel Like Giving Up On My Career?

Firstly, You need to understand that giving up is a thought that comes from the place of unrealistic perception or image about something and tends to cripple one’s ability or mindset to achieve success.  Every human has and would continually encounter this phase of life when we feel like quitting. You might be thinking the people you look up to in society had it easy all through but then,  some things do not seem to be the way they appear. It took a lot of courage and determination for them to overcome the obstacles that might have weighed them down before they attained their peak of success.

Success in every area of life especially one’s career comes with a price that has to be paid. The journey to attaining one’s achievement in life is always a rough road that might include a breakdown due to various reasons.  Only the patient and courageous ones get to their destinations; the reason why  Winston Churchill said; Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that count. This courage could be attributed to Thomas Eddison who never allowed giving up to become a hindrance to his success story; despite a thousand failed attempts, he never gave up on his goals but strived to ensure that we have a bulb as a source of light in our various spaces today.

Why would you then allow a mere thought to cheat you to put an end to your hard work?

This is why we have put together some steps that are necessary for you to get back on your feet and scale through this phase of giving up. Firstly, let us take a look at the triggers of having to give up on one’s career.

Delay

Patience, they say is a virtue. However, when it is prolonged, it becomes a vexing tool. Getting a delay in a career tends to feel like a time waster, especially when a plan has been outlined to achieve a goal at a certain period. It is really painful to achieve little in a long while after careful planning, this may cause the thoughts of going out of the tunnel since the light at the end is taking too long to reflect.

Pressure

Pressure can come from everyone and anything. Society constantly reminds people that they need to get up and do something. Even though those words might seem like advice or a push in the real sense, they are sometimes pressure in disguise because the weight of each sentence makes you feel like you are doing less even though you are doing more.

Lack of fulfillment

Being unable to attain the professional level that people desire may make them quit their careers. Perhaps, you want to learn a course, and there is no financial backup, or not getting promoted in the workplace as expected, could lead to the thought of giving up.

Failure

Failure is not the end, but a failed attempt in a career journey could make someone quit because they feel they can not achieve anything again. Rather than picking up the pieces, and striving to attain success, they become weak and give up easily.

Imposter syndrome

Lack of trust in what one can do or the extent to which the person can attain mastery can make people quit their careers. They believe they can not do a task or take upon a new project by doubting their abilities. All these are factors that trigger the thought of giving up.

So whenever you feel like giving up on your career, Do This!!!

Take a break

If you feel overwhelmed by whatever you are doing and you are already thinking of quitting, kindly stop whatever it is you are doing and take a break from that project. A break might be as simple as sleeping to relax your brain a bit. Sleep gives more energy to the body and brain.  You can also go out and take in fresh air, and do some exercise, all away from the tediousness of work. By the time you come back, your mind will have been refreshed to think about the way forward or the next steps positively.

Find an optimistic distraction

The essence of a good distraction is to shift your mind from one thing to another better thing. Distract yourself with things that would give you a sense of accomplishment no matter how small. You could do your laundry, finish a book, and watch motivating content. Although an interesting movie would distract you with laughter, it is only for a while before you go back to your thoughts again. But, when you distract yourself with a positive activity, you will feel more energetic to get back to your task.

Re-evaluation

Why did you take up that career before? What were you trying to achieve? What has brought you this far? What went wrong? where and how?  These are some of the questions that you need to ask yourself in evaluating the reasons that come into your mind. Ask yourself this honest question: is your career or life worth giving up? If not, then you keep going with your mind and focus on the result.
