Again, the British Council in Nigeria has increased the amount that candidates interested in writing IELTS will have to pay by 2%.
The Examination Board has decided that, instead of the N107,500 that Nigerians have to pay to write the exam, they will now have to pay a sum of N139,000 with effect from February 1, 2024. This is not the first time the council is implementing an increase as one just happened 5 months ago.
A number of people have attested to the fact that IELTS used to be sold for N70,000, N80,000, and N90,000 until these prices unexpectedly moved past what they used to be. It just went up to N107,500 in September 2023 and has now added about N31,000.

Why the Price Increase in the IELTS Fee?
The Council has attributed the increase in the price of the IELTS fees to the rise in the growing expenses associated with conducting exams in Nigeria. Establishing the information on its website, it says:
- We would like to inform you that there has been a review of our IELTS fees. The new price list of the IELTS range of tests offered by the British Council will be effective for registrations on or after 1 February 2024.
- The new prices will be: IELTS on Computer Academic and General Training Modules: ₦139,000
- IELTS on Paper Academic and General Training Modules: ₦134,000; UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI): ₦149,000; Life Skills: ₦130,000; One Skill Retake (O.S.R): ₦87,570
- The price change is associated with the increased costs in the delivery of our exams. This will enable us to continue to offer a wide range of services and comprehensive support to enable you to achieve your goals. Thank you for choosing the British Council.
Anybody who goes on the IELTS website to make a payment will be welcomed with this information.
What do people think about the new increase?
Many people have concluded that delay is dangerous and it is better to purchase the exam now than when the price goes up again. Someone on X said:
“Here’s another reason for you to know that delay is very dangerous. The price was once between ₦89,500 before it was later increased to ₦107,500 in September last year, and it’s about to be increased to ₦134,000 for paper & ₦139,000 for computer.”
If you have plans to take the English test, it is important to get it done right away because you never can tell what will become of the price in a few months.
