Currently, there are a lot of corps members serving in different states of the country, and usually, it is the job of the federal government to provide a primary place of assignment to each corper serving. However, given that some of these members may have their personal preferences and are likely to move to different states after the initial three-week orientation camp, it could become a hassle to find a primary place for assignments. The duty shifts from being the government’s to yours because you willingly changed your state of service.
What is a Primary Place of Assignment?
The primary place of assignment, PPA, is a company or organization where you are expected to fulfill certain obligations/responsibilities for a year. During that period, the NYSC body requests that the company treat you as their staff and award you the same respect and benefits they will give to their staff members while you are there. Also, for confirmation, this organization is required to give you an acceptance letter which will indicate that you have been approved to work with them within the period stipulated by the federal government.
Why do people look for PPA?
From scratch, the plan is never to have NYSC members look for PPA on their own but sometimes, corpers do not find the PPAs allocated to them interesting or fulfilling enough. Considering this, they want to find a place that aligns with their skills and long-term goals so that they might find it easy to transition into roles they want.

Finding PPA
Finding a worthwhile organization to serve for a year has to come with so much intentionality. If you are rejecting the federal government’s PPA, then you must put in the work to look for where you want. Here are tips that can help you find a PPA faster.
Talk about it on Online
Closed mouths don’t get fed. This means that you may not get a placement if you don’t talk about it in places that can help. The repost feature on X is the best to do the work for you and there is no need to sleep on it. You can make a simple tweet talking about your qualifications, the services you can render, and the preferred field you would love to work in. Also, if you are using X for this purpose, don’t forget to ask that people retweet your tweet such that it can get to the right audience.
Ask Around
“Hey! Does your company need corps members?” has to be the easiest way to shoot your shot when you need a placement. Ask your friends, there could be an opening at their office or they may know someone who is currently hiring and that way, they can link you up with such people. Also, you might take the opportunity to ask any family member who runs an organization if they will be willing to take you on as long as the goals of the company align with yours.

Search
Certain job boards and companies have adopted the practice of labeling the positions they require. This means that if they specifically need a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, using that particular keyword in a search will yield numerous job opportunities tailored to that requirement. This method simplifies the process of searching for NYSC-related roles, streamlines the job search, and provides relevant options that suit your status as a corps member.
Volunteer
If you see an organization with the opportunity that you need, volunteering may be necessary at this point. By offering your time, skills, or services without expecting immediate compensation, you open doors to gain valuable experience, network with professionals, and showcase your capabilities. So, just do it!
These tips are simple and if you try out any or all of them, you may be lucky enough to find a primary place of assignment sooner than you think.
