Why do you think some people will really never turn towards 9-5? These artisans are doing what they really love being creative and getting paid while at it; sounds like double fulfilment. So, if you are doubting whether there are top-paying artisan jobs, there is no need to be unsure. There are quite a number of them and they will be discussed in this article.
Who is an Artisan?
We don’t want to imagine that everyone currently reading is familiar with the word “Artisan”, so here is a simple definition – Artisans are individuals who are exceptionally skilled and can create or build several items/materials using their hands and some tools. However, most of the time, the idea is, that even while using these tools, their hands are still at work. Especially in Nigeria, there is a way people look at artisans because they don’t think they earn much doing what they do. The truth is, artisans earn a lot too! While this may not apply to all of them, some enjoy the income attached to these jobs and we have discussed these types of artisans. Keep reading.
Glass Artists
If you live in or frequent industrial areas such as Ikeja, Yaba, and Lagos island, most of the buildings are built with glass. Some people even refer to these buildings as glass houses. Apart from these buildings, the windows in most houses and offices are made of glass and this is important as it is rare to find houses without good windows. Glass artists are a “necessity” and times without numbers, their services are required. Considering how skilled they are, they charge really well to cut, shape, blow, and fix the right glass to not just windows but doors, partitions, lamps, and other decorative elements. Their services are important to construction companies and renovation industries. According to Paylab, glass artists earn over 200,000 for a project.
Furniture makers
One of the materials that adds to the beauty of a room or apartment including homes and offices is good, aesthetically pleasing, and durable furniture. While it is easy to look at a piece of furniture and imagine that it doesn’t cost a lot, 80% of the time, it does cost much.
We came across this post on Instagram and a chair costs almost N50,000. What happens if this artisan has to make about 7 pieces of this chair in a month, that’s N350,000 for seven pieces of furniture. Best believe this artisan would also have some more orders for other pieces of furniture such as tables, sofas, consoles, hangers, and many others. Furniture makers also make a decent amount of money from putting their skills to use if you need to.
POP artisans
“Plaster of Paris” commonly known as POP is a white powder that is usually mixed with water to create a wallboard in buildings/apartments. POP in apartments usually comes off as interior designs because the outcome gives the apartment a very beautiful look and this boils down to how skilled the POP artisan is.
Looking at this POP ceiling, it doesn’t look like what an unskilled person will do. POP artisans receive their flowers by charging amounts that are commensurate with their hard work which is usually around hundreds of thousands depending on the size and style.
Fashion Designers
Nigerians love to attend parties and all sorts of events and usually, this comes with wearing new outfits. Finding the best outfits usually comes easy because fashion designers in Nigeria are very talented. When Ebuka hosted the Bigbrother show, a lot of Nigerians could not stop talking about how really nice his outfit looked – again, give it to Nigerian fashion designers. Of course, not all fashion designers would earn the same amount but some of them who are exceptionally skilled and exposed tend to earn a lot.
As seen on the streets of Instagram, this dress costs N350,000. The fashion designer may even have to make more and that translates to making a lot of money.
ShoeMakers
Shoemakers lean towards the trend of fashion to make trendy footwear for people who are willing to purchase. The truth is, as long as you continue to meet the demand of people for stylish and trendy shoes, you are likely to get yourself a mass production that will not only give you enough money but the trust of your customers who know that you are familiar with their needs. According to Tijoandbibs, a shoe brand in Lagos, Cover shoes cost between N28,000 to N40,000 depending on the style and specifics, slides cost between 15,000 – 20,000 and Sandals cost between N10,000 – N20,000. This means that a shoemaker can earn thousands and even hundreds of thousands of naira monthly if they get mass production.
Makeup Artist
For every event, whether big or small – weddings, birthdays, graduations, or public speaking events, people (women especially) require the service of a makeup artist to make their faces look more beautiful and appealing. Makeup artists have a variety of skills and tools that are used to transform their clients to have the look they really want. In Nigeria, Makeup artists charge per event and sometimes do this alongside gele tying (depending on the request of the client.) While makeup artists may be mainly associated with events, they also work with filmmakers to transform actors and actresses in such a way that they physically fit their roles. According to the Nifyess_signature on Instagram, a makeup artist may charge between N15,000 – N35,000 for a casual glam, N35,000 – N50,000 for an Owanbe glam, and over N100,000 for a bridal glam.
Conclusion
It is important to note that, although the jobs listed are high-paying ones for artisans, the pay may not be the same for everyone in the category because factors like level of expertise, exposure, and size of customer base may come to play.
